It’s a Journey

When I opened up my instagram today I was met with a fitgirl photo from fitgirl_michelle2015. The photo on the left showed her at the beginning of her journey 4 months ago and the right photo was her recent photo. On the right she looked strong, happy, fit. Before and after photos are powerful because we see the results, we see a side we relate to and we see a side we want to achieve. But the problem is we see nothing else. We don’t see the struggle, the sick days, the days we fell off the training schedule, the tears, the disappointment. Instead, we idolize the desirable pic.

That’s my problem. I tell myself I want to get fit and I’ll start out but, oh, if I don’t see results I get discouraged and eat poorly and I have to start all over again. Well, what if this time, I keep it, I adopt it as my way of life and I keep at it? I want to find out how I would feel being strong, fit and confident. It’s worth it. I want to do it.

Great Weekend of Running & Hiking

I did all my training runs this week!

Days 1, 2 & 3: 4.8k/3 miles
Day 4: 8 km/5 miles

Next week I’ve got two 4.8k runs, 6.4k and another 8k. That will get me comfortable with running regularly again. I’m excited!

I feel kinda of creaky right now but last night I spent some quality time in a hot tub which was heavenly. Now I’m sitting with a towel on my head deep conditioning. I need to trim my ends but I don’t know if that’s going to happen today. Maybe next week… (famous last words, I know).

B and I went for a hike yesterday. I’m so shit with directions and I wanted to take him on a hike I went on about 4 months ago.. oy. Me: “I don’t remember it being this far… Maybe it’s just over that hill… Look for a tiny blue sign on the side of the road. It should be coming up now… I don’t remember passing this rest stop.” FINALLY we got there and I didn’t realize it was still winter outside of town so I couldn’t drive in like we did in the fall because there was still snow. So we hiked in from the road and B pointed out animal tracks and I was all shut up shut up shut up. I like nature I just don’t like what’s living in nature. And I am shit scared of bears. But they were moose tracks. Aight cool. We hiked up but only to the first lake, not all three, since it took us so long to find the place at all we were losing day time.

The hike was wonderful though, even with it pouring rain. It was just what I needed. After our hike we met up with B’s coworker and his gf who actually works for the same company I do but in a different department. They were great and dinner was yummy. Then it was BBQ and hot tubbin at our friends. I was DD so I took B’s car, dropped him off, then L and I looked at each other and decided we both needed food. It was so good but so bad but so good.

This morning I suited up for my run, dropped B’s car off at his place and ran from his back to mine, the long route, since I had 8k to cover. Got home and here I am with a towel on my head. A pretty solid weekend actually. Now I’m going to spend some quality time with S a

With L being a teacher and me being at work 90% of my weekdays, we realized we hadn’t seen each other in a full week! I gave her the biggest of hugs when I saw her at the BBQ. Friends 🙂

Rocco has been washed, deep conditioned, blow dried to stretch, trimmed (he needed it!) and twisted. He is set for a while. Phew. Glad that’s done.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. Next week I’m going to be spending a lot of time in meetings so lunch/snacks are being provided. It saves me cash on buying foods but I do need to be aware of what I’m eating and not eat for two just cause it’s free yknow? 😉

Running + A Recipe

My second 10k run this morning! Let me break it down for you. I started out pretty strong. I was even thinking to myself ‘wow, I’ve really picked up the pace’. I wasn’t exhausting myself or sprinting but for about 3k I was maintaining a pace a little faster than I usually do. But then I realized I can’t continue for another 7k at this pace so I did take it down a notch.

My route where I turn around was at about 4k and I stretched for a moment. My right hip always feels a little ‘out’ when I run. I should look into this before I injure myself. But I did stop to stretch, feel the breeze and take a couple of pics. The temperature was great, about 8C and there was some nice ocean air. Plenty of other walkers with their dogs on the route which was nice.

Anyway, the last 6k my pace was slower and fairly steady. I did come in at 54:20 so that’s about 3 minutes off which is aaawesome. I think I’m going to do a 5k tomorrow, maybe improve my time for that.

So yeah, second 10k is down and since then I have cleaned the bathroom, eaten my yummy steel cut oats with apple (I am convinced to find and try the crockpot recipe for this), and now I am jamming out on my couch to Michael Jackson beats!

Here are some photos from my run!

And now! The moment you’ve all been waiting for!!!! *drumroll*

The most DELICIOUS quinoa recipe I have experienced thus far. I kid you not. Yesterday, Roomie-T mentioned she was going toIMG_2294 make a quinoa salad that her mom had made her while she was home visiting and I was all, cool. Little did I know this would be the best thing to happen to my mouth in a long time. So here it is!! Try to contain your excitement. Look at this beauty!

Now the recipe calls for chicken stock/chicken but if you’re veggie (like me, for the duration of Lent, more on that later) then veggie stock and a whackload of yummy veggies will do you just fine. We added chickpeas. The recipe is here. It’s super easy, the only thing you have to cook is the quinoa. I’ve decided this has just moved it’s way up to being featured as my ‘lunch for the week’. *pause for applause* It’s a coveted title in my world. The recipe also called for kalamata olives (yumm!!) but roomie-T isn’t a fan so she skipped this. But for my week’s lunch I am going to add peppers and olives. I am going to be one happy girl!

Oh and for the sake of randomness here’s some pics from my V-Day which I realized was V-Day about after lunch and at that point it got a ‘meh’ from me.

Another Day

Sluggish day at the gym today. I overate last night.. I know that for a fact. I gave that treadmill 75%. I was not feeling it. I did do my part on floor exercises though. Lunges, planks, stretching, that arm machine. One thing I am getting a kick out of and that’s biking. I biked to the gym at 7:30am, worked out til 9am and biked home to shower and change then biked to work for 11am a quick 4 hour shift. And I was early to work! Seriously, I’m loving that I can get places so quickly.

It was raining on my way home but my fenders are doing an awesome job of keeping my backpack/jacket clean. It didn’t bother me to be a little damp when I got home. It’s the sniffles I get from being inside 5 minutes after that annoys me. But tis the season. All in all Hermie has been a great pal. So happy to have him.

I’m going to have some tea tonight, and some soup for dinner and relax and braid my hair. *yaaaawn*

Girl Meets Bike

Meet Hermie. My bike. She’s great.

I rode in traffic today. I shoulder checked like crazy. I am all about the shoulder checking. Why? Because I’m a human on a bike. I’m not a human in a bike. I don’t have a bike to protect me. I ride on it. And cars are much much bigger than bikes. And me. And they’re not human powered. They’re combustion powered. They take one foot to go fast. I take my whole body to go fast. I’m sure you know where i’m going with this. Safety first bikers and drivers.

Here’s some pics.

PS: Oh yeah the bike I purchased is a Cannondale ‘Quick 5’. So much appreciation for this bike.

10k Walk/Run

Good start. E and I went quite far. She mentioned she wasn’t much of a runner so she did give me fair warning. We walked quite a bit but it was really good because we had time to catch up. At the end of her walk she headed home and I jogged from her place to mine so I fit in a run. But we made plans for hiking and more running. She wants to up her distance which is great. We went at 9:30am and she suggested perhaps going a little earlier for next runs? I was like, heck yes! I usually go earlier. We were just hesitant to suggest to the other going too early in case they weren’t up for it. But I looove early morning runs. It gets a little too warm, bright and busy outside when I start off too late. So that’s great. I’m happy to have a good friend join me in that.

Wonderful being outside on such a gorgeous morning!

Alright Friends, Time To Get Real!

I have not been very good at working out. At all. I admit it. And I admit it to myself. I have made plans with myself to workout but haven’t followed through. But let’s not dwell on the past!! Haha!

Tomorrow morning going for a workout with my friend. We’re going to run our tushes off and maybe hit the gym, I’m not sure. I really…. here’s the thing. I’m normally pretty broke so I would really rather skip the gym and do at home work outs. I think they’re better. For me. I workout harder, I push myself. When I’m at the gym, I do a little bit of this, and a little bit of that… but I’m not focused. So, maybe I can talk E out of hitting the gym and maybe finding a park and doing sets of burpees and mountain climbers and stuff like that?

Anyway, I’m working two jobs now. I picked up a couple shifts at my old work so tomorrow I work 1:30-11 which isn’t so bad. I’m just excited to be making more monies. Yay!

Anyway! As far as  I just wanted to say: BRING IT!!!!!

So! Feel free to drop a comment asking me about my workout. Tweet me randomly and ask what I’ve done that day. Any day. I need to be held accountable haha! Even better: join me in feeling the burn, sweating, sore muscles and all round improvement of your day and your body =)
